Remember the good old days of the Wuhan virus?
Back in January, our public health officers here in Canada and the United States – actually all across the West – were telling us there was nothing to worry about.
Canada’s chief medical doctor Dr. Theresa Tam actually said that because of our experience with the SARS pandemic back in 2003, we had this under control.
The United States’ chief doctor Dr. Anthony Fauci was saying the same thing. In fact, he actually said the flu was at epidemic levels and we needed to worry about that.
Close the borders?
Screen incoming travelers?
Wear face mask?
Anyone who merely suggested that this virus was one of those existential threats they make movies about was a fear monger.
Worse, we were accused of being racists.
We wanted to quarantine China because we hated Chinese people.
We weren’t going to our Chinatown restaurants become we were racists.
We had politicians from Toronto’s Mayor John Tory to New York’s Mayor Bill De Blasio telling us to get out there and mingle. Hug the next Chinese looking person you see.
Man, those were the good old days.
Here we are four months later living in Hell.
The virus has killed thousands of people – virtually all of them seniors trapped in elderly care facilities and our chief public health officials are sorta, kinda admitting they might have handled things differently.
What kills me is that we pay these folks really good money.
Dr. Tam makes over $300,000 a year.
What in Hell’s name are we getting for all that high-priced advice?
Nothing of value.
Take the whole business of masks, for example.
In the beginning, the WHO, Tam and the other so-called experts were telling us that face masks weren’t needed. Waste of money, they said.
They even said it was actually more dangerous to wear a mask.
When some folks said the opposite, the fact checkers went nuts. Listen to the experts. You skeptics are science deniers.
Now, masks are being recommended and are mandatory in some places.
Make up your Goddamn minds.
Don’t give us this bullshit about SARS-CoV-2 being a novel virus and the science is evolving.
Coronaviruses have been around a long, long time. While we may not know everything about this particular one, we ought to know enough to provide sound, consistent advice.
Sound advice. Boy, would that been nice to have.
After dropping the ball on quarantining China, stopping the influx of infected people, the only approach our public health officials could come up with was to lock us all down.
It was to protect the elderly, they said, and stop the spread.
Well, it did squat to protect the elderly. They died in the tens of thousands. Eighty to 90 per cent of all the deaths have been old people in elderly care facilities.
We knew this would happen. Every flu season the elderly are sitting ducks in those care facilities. We saw the death toll of seniors in other countries.
We did nothing but shut down our economies.
This was madness. Thousands are dying of other diseases as a consequence. We are headed into a 10 year depression.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I expect a little more from someone making $300,000 a year.
If all our chief medical officers are going to do is follow whatever the World Health Organization is saying, why do we need them?
We need people who can think on their feet, who can manage a crisis who have some common sense.
Dr. Tam needs to be fired, as do the majority of our chief public health officials.
Can’t do the job? We get someone who can.
